This is the second and third chapters of my novella Trieste<\/a>, now available on Kindle! A tale of sudden and drastic family revelations when a pixie punk shows up to turn the world of punk power couple Miranda and Preston upside down!<\/p>\n

This story stars Miranda, the main character of my novel Blood, Skin, and Ink<\/a>, as well as Preston, the main character of my two novels The Falling Circle<\/a> and A Long Slow Aftermath<\/a>. They, along with many other punks in this tale, also have stories in my Skye Wright series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Du Nervst, Du Scheisskopf!<\/h3>\n

<\/center><\/p>\n

     \u201cYou\u2019re annoying, you shithead!\u201d
\n     \u201cThat\u2019s what it means?\u201d asked Miranda.
\n     \u201cDirect translation.\u201d
\n     \u201cDu nervst, du Scheisskopf.\u201d
\n     \u201cExactly!\u201d
\n     Molly sat back with her milkshake, quite satisfied with her German teaching skills.
\n     Skye was in the next booth, talking animatedly with one of the German punks who had been invited to the Gilman show by the Jolly Sturms. From what Miranda understood, some of their European friends spoke very little English.
\n     Molly glanced at the other booth. \u201cSkye\u2019s German has gotten really good.\u201d
\n     \u201cIt\u2019s still all Greek to me.\u201d
\n     Miranda was impressed with how young Molly still looked. She knew her from her days as the singer for The Bus Stop Hookers, the iconic Bay Area band that took the punk scene by storm with their pornographic songs. Now the singer with the round, youthful face, short spiked black hair, and Buddy Holly glasses was now her bandmate in The Dynamite Chicks. She was also one of the most recognizable members of the band.
\n      Jutta leaned into Molly and they started chattering in German. Miranda sat back, glancing around the late-night burger diner with all of its faux retro decorations. It was crowded with punks from the Gilman show. Half of the crowd had dyed-black hair, while many of the other half had bright and colorful locks; dyed green, blue, fire-engine red, and one particularly noticeable punk with a leopard skin print mohawk.
\n     Most everyone was wearing leather jackets, old army surplus jackets, flight jackets, and denim jackets, usually covered with patches and pins. A number of people in the crowd looked like college students, small groups of people who had been at the show who were just wearing band shirts and didn\u2019t have any of the typical punk affectations that were so common among that tribe.
\n      Most of the crowd looked as if they were in their twenties or thirties, but a gaggle of very young punks who were chattering loudly as they waited in line to order were making Miranda feel her age. They looked as if they were still in high school, as if they were not even old enough to vote yet.
\n      Miranda considered that they perhaps only looked young because she was getting older, even though she was just in her early thirties.
\n     She leaned on the table and let out a long sigh. Her skin seemed to press in on her. She clenched her hands.
\n     \u201cSee someone?\u201d asked Skye as she sat down next to Miranda.
\n     \u201cNaw. Just getting a weird\u2026 vibe I guess?\u201d
\n     \u201cSomethin’ witchy goin’ on?\u201d
\n     Miranda slumped in her seat and scrunched her shoulders. \u201cFuck it. I’m just feelin’ sketchy.\u201d
\n     \u201cMaybe you\u2019re just paranoid.\u201d
\n     \u201cThere\u2019s no such thing as paranoia!\u201d
\n     Skye leaned in closer to Miranda. \u201cWas it the drunk punks? We\u2019re they plucking your nerves?\u201d
\n     Miranda sat up straight. She was surprised. At Herself.
\n     \u201cNo, not really,\u201d said Miranda as she knitted her brow in thought. \u201cIt\u2019s weird, early on in my sobriety it would\u2019ve been a problem, seeing all of those drunk dingbats in the club. It would’ve gotten to me.\u201d
\n     Skye sat back. \u201cYou\u2019ve got a sobriety birthday coming up, right?\u201d
\n     \u201cThree years, yeah.\u201d
\n     \u201cY\u2019see? You\u2019re gettin\u2019 in a groove. You\u2019re getting along with the clean and sober life.\u201d
\n     \u201cI guess so. But still, something about this night seemed off, and I don\u2019t know what the hell it could be.\u201d
\n      Skye sat back and looked around. \u201cSometimes my junky instincts clue me in on bullshit I\u2019d rather not know about.\u201d
\n      Miranda reached around and adjusted her waist-length ponytail as she looked around the crowd again. So many people from the club had shown up that people started congregating in the diner\u2019s lobby. Miranda stood up when she saw Gail Burp, the tall and pale singer whose solo act was going viral. She was also Molly\u2019s wife.
\n     The crowd of leather jackets, patch jackets, and battle vests grew large enough that the restaurant staff opened a small side dining room that had been cordoned off. Miranda\u2019s attempt to talk to Gail was foiled by fawning fans and fellow musicians who had gotten to her first.
\n     \u201cTrying to get Gail\u2019s autograph?\u201d
\n     Miranda turned around. It was Preston.
\n     \u201cI couldn\u2019t find you in this fucked up crowd,\u201d said Miranda.
\n     \u201cNo shit. This is like the show part two. There\u2019s at least a dozen punks smokin\u2019 in the parking lot.\u201d
\n     Gust walked up and threw an arm around Preston. \u201cHey, me n\u2019 Miranda caught someone checkin\u2019 you out.\u201d
\n     \u201cSure you did,\u201d snarked Preston.
\n     \u201cNo, really! She was lookin\u2019 at you like you were a forty ouncer!\u201d
\n     \u201cNo, she wasn\u2019t. Who would do that?\u201d
\n     \u201cDon\u2019t be so down on yourself there, stud muffin!\u201d said Gust as she poked Preston in the chest.
\n     \u201cMiranda, she just poked me on the nipple.\u201d
\n     \u201cI suppose I need to be worried about you,\u201d said Miranda as she narrowed her eyes. \u201cGawkers and nipple pokers comin\u2019 after you.\u201d
\n     Gust threw her arms around Preston. \u201cDon\u2019t worry, studly! I\u2019ll protect you!\u201d
\n     \u201cBut who will protect me from you?\u201d asked Preston who then looked at Miranda.
\n     \u201cSorry! I can\u2019t get involved at this time,\u201d smiled Miranda as Gust\u2019s antics helped her tension subside.<\/p>\n

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ <\/p>\n

     Miranda brought the iPad closer to her face. She was reading an email from a Miss Von FluffenTetas, an email that, at first, she thought was some sort of pornographic advertisement that had snuck past her spam filter. She realized it was an old work friend getting in touch with her about her new burlesque show.
\n     She was at Butt Fork Studios, the legendary alt-music recording studio that her guitarist and band leader Skye had managed to buy, an event that had taken her and just about everyone else by complete surprise. They had spent so many years as poor, besotted punks scratching out a living in the concrete jungle that the idea that anyone she personally knew could own an actual business, especially one that was doing so well, was alien to her.
\n      She was sitting at Skye\u2019s desk, as she did not have her own spot to work at in the Butt Fork offices, despite her going by there frequently enough to feel like she was one of the employees.
\n     Miranda was not sure why, but she was concerned that someone might be reading over her shoulder. Her band manager and Butt Fork\u2019s studio director Tandasil was always darting in and out, as well as Tandasil\u2019s dynamo assistant Colleen, the only woman Miranda had ever met who seemed as if she could not get enough work.
\n     \u201cWhatcha doin\u2019?\u201d asked Skye as she walked up.
\n     Miranda held up her iPad. \u201cGot an email from an old work buddy of mine. She\u2019s putting on a punk burlesque show.\u201d
\n     \u201cYeah? She tryin\u2019 to get you into the show?\u201d
\n     \u201cYep!\u201d
\n     \u201cReally? I was just kidding.\u201d
\n     \u201cShe\u2019s trying to get me back into the strippin\u2019 biz. I mean, the burlesque stuff. Not the full-on nudie act.\u201d
\n     \u201cI wonder how that would play, you waving your cruise missiles around in pasties now that you\u2019re like, a kinda big deal in the music scene.\u201d
\n     Miranda waved a hand at Skye. \u201cI don\u2019t look as good naked now as I used to.\u201d
\n     \u201cLike every punk in the scene wouldn\u2019t crash through the doors to see you nakey.\u201d
\n     \u201cBlah. My days of takin\u2019 off my clothes for money are over.\u201d
\n     \u201cWe can at least go check her show out.\u201d
\n     \u201cMaybe you should go dance for her.\u201d
\n     Skye could not hold back a laugh. \u201cMe? Who the hell would want to see me take my clothes off?\u201d
\n     \u201cTake your clothes off?\u201d
\n     They both turned around. Neither one of them having seen Molly come into the office.
\n     \u201cSomeone’s trying to lure Miranda back into stripping,\u201d said Skye.
\n     \u201cHell yeah!\u201d smiled Molly. \u201cLemme\u2019 go grab some tip money!\u201d
\n     \u201cAny chance I could get my workplace back?\u201d asked Skye as she leaned on her desk.
\n     \u201cSure,\u201d said Miranda as she stood up.
\n     Skye sat down and opened her laptop. \u201cWith the way things are going we\u2019re gonna need more office space, including non-designated work stations.\u201d
\n     \u201cJesus,\u201d said Molly. \u201cNow you\u2019re really starting to talk like a corporate clone.\u201d
\n     \u201cIf Tandasil and Colleen had their way they\u2019d be calling me the CEO.\u201d
\n     \u201cUch!\u201d winced Miranda.
\n     Molly leaned on the desk and looked right at Skye. \u201cYou\u2019re coming to Hat Confusion tonight, aren\u2019t you?\u201d
\n     \u201cAre you kidding? I wouldn\u2019t miss it for all the onion rings at Nathan\u2019s!\u201d Skye looked at Miranda. \u201cI know you\u2019re gonna be there.\u201d
\n     \u201cI can\u2019t not support my man,\u201d stated Miranda emphatically.<\/p>\n
