33 Hours of Pinball – Yes, Really!

Because of the Covcid-19 lockdown this event was postponed. Still intend to do it this year when things calm down. (Knocks on wood.)

This upcoming April I am going to attempt something crazy, possibly insane, and perhaps highly questionable: I am going to attempt to break the World Record for the longest time playing pinball.

I will be attempting this mighty feat after the Covid-19 lockdown. I am also raising funds for Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy in conjunction with this event!

When I tell people about these World Record attempt, the most common question I and others who have pursued this record is “What if you have to go to the bathroom?” The Guinness Book of World Records lets you take one five minute break every hour, and you can bank break minutes. I’m going to try and play two to three hour stretches so I can take ten to fifteen minute breaks.

Other rules: I can only attempt this marathon on one game. Not necessarily the same machine, but the same game. The last guy who broke this record did so on a Black Knight: Sword of Rage machine, with a second BKSOR machine as a backup in case the first one broke down. I also have to have monitors who can attest that I did indeed play for 33 hours, though the world record currently stands at 32 hours and 2 minutes, so I just have to go the one extra minute to break it!

What makes me think I can do this?

I am a long distance runner. Last year I ran a total of seven marathons, and six of those marathons were the last half of twelve marathons in twelve months! I have also participated in long distance relay races where I’ve been up for the better part of thirty hours. I am confident I have the physical stamina to pull off this feat!

I am also thinking that the staying up part is going to be the easy part. I’m not a very good sleeper anyways. I usually have trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep. If they had an olympic sleeping team, I wouldn’t be on it. (Some of my friends would be though!)

I believe the hardest part is the toll it will take on my hands, wrists, and feet. The standing and playing will be physically taxing. Thus, to try and get a better idea of what I’m in for, I am going to take a training day at the Pacific Pinball Museum in a few weeks. Basically just hang out there all day playing pinball! I even created an event for it on Facebook. (When Facebook asked me for the category of the event, I put down “Sports”!)

In any case, I really want to help out PPMD, and I also enjoy a challenge. I’ve written novels, I’ve run a whole buncha marathons, and now I’m going to try and break a world record. True, it may not be the most impressive world record, but it’s something!

    1. I have contacted the Guinness Book of World Records on the rules, and while I can’t say for certain, I believe one of the rules is you must stand at the game for the whole attempt. Sitting is not allowed. At least I’m assuming! I will know for sure when I get the rules from Guinness!
